The great Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints died at the age of 73 after contracting a coronavirus.
Dempsey set the longest NFL basket record with a 63-yard kick in 1970 – and he was not beaten until 2013.
The playmaker, born without toes on his right foot and fingers on his right hand, has played for five teams in 11 seasons in the NFL.
Dempsey, who has battled Alzheimer’s and dementia since 2012, was diagnosed with Covid-19 on March 25.
He died Saturday and is survived by his wife Carlene, his children and grandchildren.
The owner of the Saints, Gayle Benson, said: “Tom’s life was directly linked to the power of the human spirit and represented his resolute determination not to allow setbacks to hinder the realization of his dreams and aspirations.
“He illustrated the same fight and the same courage in recent years as he valiantly fought against diseases, but never faltered and kept his characteristic sense of humor. “
