The documentary series won over fans around the world for its gripping review of the quarrel between the keeper of exotic animals Joe Exotic and animal rights activist Carole Baskin.
Despite the deep dive into the chaotic love life of Mr. Exotic – full name Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage – something that didn’t get attention was the story of Joe’s family.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Exotic’s niece, Chealsi Putman, discussed a number of details about his infamous uncle’s past – including the fact that he has an adult son.
In the early 1980s, Joe lived with his girlfriend Kim in Eastvale, Texas, where he worked as the police chief.
The couple had a son, Brandon Chappell, who is now 38 years old and has three children.
Putman said, “Joe was in and out of Brandon’s life when he was growing up, at some point just a few years ago, Brandon and his wife at the time both worked at the zoo with Joe. “
Exotic’s niece says he was very open about Brandon being a son.
“Joe was going to tell everyone that it was his son, he made no secret of it,” she said.
In addition to revealing that Brandon is visible in some Tiger King scenes, Chealsi also claims to know why Joe Exotic’s relationship with his son fell apart.
The couple are said to have broken up after Joe tried to trick Brandon’s wife into fraudulent activity by tampering with zoo books and checking accounts.
A clash over this ultimately saw Brandon leave Exotic and the zoo with his wife and children.
Chealsi Putman also does not support his uncle’s calls for grace and has criticized celebrities or demanded his freedom.
She said, “If it was up to me, I would have sentenced him to life in prison, he would never have seen the light of day. “
Exotic is currently serving a 22-year sentence, but reports suggest that a pardon is being considered by President Donald Trump.
Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is now available on Netflix.
