Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg at ‘Mania XX will go down in history forever as one of the most bizarre WrestleMania games of all time. Fans inside Madison Square Garden, knowing that the two men were leaving quickly after the bout, showered the pair of singing songs and reacted only positively to Special Referee Steve Austin.
Vince McMahon washed his hands afterwards.
In an interview with Inside The Ropes, Goldberg revealed why he (and not Lesnar) was chosen to win the infamous fight. Apparently, it was because McMahon “wanted to kill Brock more” than Bill – the boss was thinking of losing someone he had personally invested in for years, and he considered it much worse than losing the Goldberg created by the WCW.
Without this controversial win in New York 16 years ago, Goldberg is not sure WWE would have brought it back in 2016. For Bill, losing to Mania XX would have been permanent death sentence for his career in the business.
The result came down to one thing: Goldberg or Brock Lesnar? Who did Vince hate the least? It turns out that at the time, he was a big Bill.
