The number of deaths from coronaviruses in France climbs to almost 5,400, including retirement homes

PARIS (Reuters) – The number of known cumulative deaths from coronavirus in France jumped to almost 5,400 on Thursday as the country began to include deaths in retirement homes in its data.

Jérôme Salomon, head of the public health authority, said the number of coronavirus-related deaths in hospitals increased 12% on Thursday to 4,503 from the previous day.

He added that a provisional count showed that a total of 884 people had died in nursing homes. This represents a total of 5,387 lives lost due to a coronavirus in France.

Solomon said the number of known infections has dropped to 59,105 from 56,989 in France. The number of patients requiring respiratory assistance rose to 6,399 compared to 6,017 on Wednesday.
