The coronavirus has now killed more than 50,000 people in the United States, with more than 900,000 people infected with Covid-19. Figures updated on Friday afternoon show that the total number of people who died with Covid-19 in the United States is hitting 50,988, the number expected to increase further as states report their number of deaths throughout the day .

A total of 902,315 people tested positive for the coronavirus at 1:30 p.m. EST Friday afternoon, and this number is also expected to increase throughout the day. The bleak numbers mean that the United States now has more than double the number of deaths than the second most affected country, Italy, which has nearly 26,000 deaths and more than 192,000 diagnoses. New York State is the most affected country in the United States. It has 271,000 diagnoses, more than the total number of countries with the second largest number of cases, Spain, which is approaching 220,000 cases.

Vice President Mike Pence said in a White House briefing on Thursday that the United States had tested nearly five million people for Covid-19. New Jersey is the second most affected state in the United States, with nearly 100,000 diagnoses and 5,400 deaths on Friday afternoon.

Models shared by the White House predicted a potential death toll of between 60,000 and 200,000 Americans, with most experts agreeing that the most affected American states have passed the peak of their infection.

New York saw the number of people diagnosed each day hover around 1,300, with the daily number of deaths falling slowly to 400 by the end of the week.

China – where the coronavirus originates – faces numerous accusations of lying about its claim to have seen only 88,000 diagnoses and 4,600 deaths. The country, which has a population of 1.4 billion, has been charged with concealing tens of thousands of deaths from Covid-19.
