Sport in France is not one of the government’s priorities

(AP) – French Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu has said that resuming sporting events in the country is not one of the government’s priorities.

France is locked up until May 11 due to the coronavirus pandemic and speculation has recently increased about the possible resumption of the country’s football league in late June.

Maracineanu says “what is certain is that sport will not be a priority in our society. “

The Tour de France cycling race has been rescheduled to start on August 29 and end on September 20. The last day coincides with the same day that the rescheduled Roland-Garros tennis tournament is to begin.

Maracineanu was speaking in an Eurosport television interview on Wednesday evening. She says the leagues could potentially start in September or have their remaining games canceled. There are 10 league games left in the two best French football championships. The Top 14 Rugby League has reached the semi-finals.

Public rallies are banned in France until at least mid-July, but Maracineanu says they could be extended until “at least September”.

Maracineanu is a former Olympic swimmer. She says “it would not be the end of the world” if the Tour de France were to be canceled.
