The German public health authority launched a smartwatch app on Tuesday in partnership with start-up Healthtech Thryve to help monitor the spread of COVID-19 and analyze whether measures to contain the new coronavirus pandemic are working.
The Corona-Datenspende https://corona-datenspende.de (Corona Data Donation) app collects the vital signs of volunteers wearing smart watches or fitness trackers – including pulse, temperature and sleep – to analyze s ‘They are symptomatic of the flu.
The results will be represented on an interactive online map that would allow health authorities and the general public to assess the prevalence of infections down to the postcode level, along with other data entries.
“If the sample is large enough to capture enough symptomatic patients, this would help us draw conclusions about the spread of infections and the effectiveness of containment measures,” said Lothar Wieler, director of the Robert Koch Institute which coordinates the coronavirus response in Germany.
Some smart watches are capable of measuring body temperature, a key symptom and something that the Apple Watch cannot measure.
The watch can help with another sign: a high heart rate while sleeping. However, this data can only be entered if the Apple Watch is worn overnight. Most people instead charge their watches overnight.
However, it is handy to wear your watch day and night, as I discovered last year.
Most people take time to prepare in the morning before leaving for work, so it would be perfectly handy to:
- Wear the watch for sleep monitoring at night
- Take it out and recharge it when you wake up
- Put it on just before you leave home
