Shailene Woodley’s career was in full swing in the early 2010s

Throughout the 2000s, Woodley was a popular child star, primarily focused on television. She has appeared on several successful shows and has even had recurring roles on Crossing Jordan and The O.C. Then, in 2008, Woodley landed his revolutionary role in the ABC Family series The Secret Life of an American Teenager. She continued to play on the show until 2013.

Then, in 2011, Woodley successfully went to the movies as the daughter of George Clooney in the dramatic comedy by Alexander Payne The descendants. The film was nominated for several Oscars – including one for best film – and won Woodley a Golden Globe nomination.

But 2014 turned out to be the actress’s biggest year to date. She played the role of Beatrice “Tris” Prior in Divergent, based on the popular series of books for young adults by Veronica Roth. She also led a cultural phenomenon with The fault in our stars, which has raised more than $ 300 million worldwide. Woodley and fellow rising star Ansel Elgort have played cancer patients who fall in love.

The actress fell very ill, which led her to refuse many acting roles

Ironically, Woodley is perhaps even better known for playing someone in the face of a debilitating illness. The actress also explained how her own health started to weaken in the early 2010s. In the end, this hindered her then booming career, she told the New York Times.

I haven’t talked about it much in public yet, and I will someday, but I was very, very sick in my early twenties. While i was doing Divergent movies and hard work, I also struggled with a deeply personal and very scary physical situation. Because of that, I said no to a lot of opportunities because I had to get better, and those jobs ended up going to my peers that I love.

Woodley wanted to take the job Hollywood sent him. But she couldn’t even say for sure if she would be able to work at all. Amidst her various counselors telling her to overcome the unknown illness, she wondered if recovery was even possible.

“I was in a place where I had no choice but to go and give up my career,” she said, “and it brought out that negative voice in my mind that continued to tour for years and years afterwards. “
