Report: New Orleans Saints and Jameis Winston finalize one-year contract

The New Orleans Saints and the quarterback Jameis Winston are finalizing a year-long agreement according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo.

The deal is expected to be concluded quickly now that the NFL draft is complete and is expected to be “economical” under the tight capping of the Saints.

“By making a one-year agreement with the Saints, Jameis Winston was going to learn and be with Sean Payton, Drew Brees and others. He would fulfill the role Teddy Bridgewater did last season before he left for Carolina. Without any other starting job, it would be an ideal landing point, “tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.

“As Saints and QB Free Agent Jameis Winston enter into a one-year deal, noting that Winston turned down a more lucrative offer elsewhere to learn from the best. The former Bucs starter has focused on his future with a smart choice, “tweeted Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

It was a roller coaster season for Winston in 2019, as he led the league passing yards to 5109 and threw 33 touchdowns, but also threw 30 interceptions. Winston’s rushing total also becomes less impressive when he takes into account that he led the NFL in total passing attempts with 626.

Drafted No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, Winston has a combined entry record of 28-42. It was little change from the state of the franchise before his arrival as Tampa has not made the playoffs since 2007.

Bucs signed Tom brady to a two-year deal at the start of the off-season, ending any chance of Winston getting one last shot from Tampa.

The Alabama native won the Heisman Trophy at Florida State in 2013, becoming the youngest to win the award at 19 years and 342 days old. This mark has since been broken by the Baltimore Ravens quarterback and former Louisville cardinal Lamar jackson.
