Quinte West Industry Closure | Quinte News

As if the COVID-19 situation is not enough, there is more bad news regarding the local economy, especially in Quinte West.

In mid-June, the Glen Miller Sonoco paper mill will be closed, leaving 138 workers, mostly unionized, unemployed.

Sonoco, one of the world’s largest diversified packaging manufacturers, said the closure was due to “market conditions”.

At the same time, Sonoco announced a huge investment of $ 83 million to modernize recycled cardboard manufacturing equipment in its main operation in South Carolina.

Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison called the news “sad” and said he had contacted MPP Todd Smith, MP Neil Ellis, the Quinte Economic Development Commission and Premier Ford to obtain help, adding that he hoped a buyer for the factory could be found soon. .

A paper mill of one kind or another has operated on the banks of the Trent River, just north of Trenton since 1880.

In early February, another Quinte West company, the Saputo cheese factory, announced the closure of its factory in late September, putting 65 people out of work.
