The Premier of Quebec says that the province is in control of the new coronavirus pandemic, but that besieged long-term care homes remain at the heart of the health crisis.

“We live in two different worlds,” said François Legault during his daily briefing on Friday.

In Quebec, to date, there are 22,616 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. This is an increase of 768 from the previous day.

There were 97 additional deaths, bringing the death toll in the province to 1,340. The majority of deaths in Quebec occurred in retirement homes.

According to Legault, the government continues to focus on protecting the elderly and strengthening the workforce in long-term care centers, where the situation is critical.

“It is our priority as we try to make a difference,” said Legault, referring to the province’s plan to gradually reopen the economy and schools.

The government will present its plan next week to allow businesses and schools to gradually resume services.

“As I said yesterday, we will not reopen next week, but we will announce the schedule so that everyone can prepare,” said Legault.

However, Legault noted that Quebecers must continue to respect the strict physical distance measures that were implemented in March.

“We are winning the battle against the first wave of contagion, but the war against the virus has only just begun,” he said. “We must continue our efforts. “
