Public transportation in the region is now free

Public transportation in the Waterloo region is now free.

The free service will be in effect until May 31 and includes GRT, ION and MobilityPLUS buses.

But officials remind residents that public transit should only be used for essential travel.

“We remain committed to providing reliable service during this difficult time for customers on essential trips. At the same time, I strongly discourage passengers from using public transit unnecessarily. Please travel in transit only if travel is essential. Said Peter Zinck, Director of Transit Services.

Customers with a monthly subscription in April will automatically see this pass postponed to the month of resumption of tariffs and will not need to contact GRT. Customers in exceptional circumstances who require a refund can call 519-585-7597 ext. 7243. GRT encourages customers to call rather than visit customer service in person, as security controlled entry will be in place and only three people will be allowed to enter the centers at a time.

Those who still use public transport are reminded to maintain a physical distance of two meters from other passengers and TSOs.

You can find more information on the GRT website.
