Premier League title hopes bolstered by Serie A plan

Liverpool’s hopes of playing the rest of their Premier League campaign have been boosted after the Serie A teams agreed that their season should be over.

The Premier League has been suspended since March 13 due to the coronavirus epidemic, but clubs have pledged to resume the season once it is known.

Liverpool are currently 25 points ahead of the table and only need two wins in their last nine games to be crowned Premier League champion for the first time in history.

Leagues across Europe are all in a position similar to the Premier League, with many proposals on how to complete them being discussed by various clubs, associations and leaders.

But now Italy has decided to confirm that the 20 Serie A teams were unanimous in trying to finish the 2019-20 season.

The clubs in the division were initially divided over what to do to move forward, Sampdoria and Torino against playing, while Brescia said they would lose matches rather than go to the field to complete the season.

“The Serie A general assembly met this morning and confirmed, with a unanimous vote of the 20 clubs connected by videoconference, the intention to end the 2019-2020 football season, if the government authorizes it” said Serie A in a statement.

The move comes just hours after UEFA confirmed, and in a glance at the Liverpool titles, that it will produce guidelines for countries wishing to end their seasons earlier.

However, UEFA has also maintained its previous recommendation to end the national seasons, which the majority of Premier League clubs are united in doing, it was confirmed on Friday.

But the Premier League has yet to submit its proposals on how to end the season, with its next meeting scheduled for a week on Friday.
