On Sky Sports this week, we’re talking about the Premier League team of the season – but who would make them an alternative XI based on certain stats? Today we are looking for the best Tackling XI …

As with each of these alternative XIs, a 4-3-3 formation will be used and the players included must have played at least 50% of the season so far.

Defense

As a position, many of the Premier League’s most persistent tacklers this season have been right backs, and it’s Everton Djibril Sidibe, who averaged the most per 90 minutes of any defender.

In front of the French international, the Wolves Jonny, which registered the most of any left rear, and the two side rears register apart from a central rear pairing of his teammate de Jonny Willy boly and from Newcastle Fabian Schar.

On goal, a total of 3 tackles is enough to install Aston Villa’s Tom heaton as the best option on this side.

Middle

In the midfield comes the king of the Premier League in this category – Leicester’s Wilfried Ndidi. Not only is 4.4 tackles by 90 minutes the best return for any player this season, it is considerably higher than a midfielder’s next best return, Southampton. Oriol Romeu (3.2 per 90 minutes), which accompanies it.

The last place is then occupied by West Ham and England Declan Rice, in a particularly uncomfortable trio.

Attack

At the front is David McGoldrick – not yet scored this season, but contributing in many other ways to his Sheffield United team.

McGoldrick is flanked by Richarlison – who has impressively recorded 20 more tackles than any other Premier League striker this season – and Leicester’s Ayoze Perez.

Although he did not appear to be an XI capable of regularly breaking his opponents, he would clearly have little problem dispossessing him repeatedly.
