PARIS (Reuters) – A small congregation of worshipers will celebrate Good Friday Mass at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, a year after it was devastated by fire, but attendance will be limited due to a lockout during the coronavirus epidemic.

On Friday, seven people will attend the TV mass, when Christians will commemorate the death of Jesus Christ.

“Only a few priests will attend the masses that we will celebrate during Holy Week and people will be able to follow the services on radio or television,” said Archbishop of Paris Michel Aupetit at a video press conference.

The service will include a wreath saved after the Notre Dame fire.

There will be no processions on Easter Saturday this year due to the foreclosure, which limits the size of public gatherings.

On Easter Sunday, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ, Aupetit will hold a mass in the Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois church near the Louvre museum in the heart of Paris, with around 20 people.

Last year, hundreds of Parisians gathered for Easter Sunday mass at Saint-Eustache church in central Paris and prayed for the fast food of Notre-Dame after the fire that ravaged it a few days earlier, April 15.

The fire destroyed the roof of the medieval cathedral, knocked down the spire and almost knocked down the main bell towers and exterior walls before the firefighters overpowered it.

President Emmanuel Macron has set a five-year goal for the restoration of Notre-Dame, one of the main European monuments.
