Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that his government will not allow companies that use offshore tax havens to receive COVID-19 bailout funds.
During the first virtual session of the House of Commons on Tuesday, Trudeau was urged by the Bloc Québécois to prevent companies that do not pay their fair share of taxes from benefiting from government assistance.
“We will continue to ensure that those who need help get it, but those who evade or avoid the tax will not get help,” he said.
Last week, under repeated questioning from the BQ and the NDP, Trudeau refused to make the same commitment, saying that his government would not refuse wage subsidies to a worker simply because of the behavior of his employer.
Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet then tweeted: “The government seems to have finally accepted (to do this). But I doubt it. We are going to watch. ”
