A New Jersey man who was timed almost twice the speed limit on a highway tried to dodge a prison trip by claiming that he came down with symptoms of coronavirus, police said on Wednesday.
Christopher Ospina, 20, of Haledon, NJ, was timed at 130 mph as he headed west on I-80 on Tuesday, according to state officials.
Ospina left the motorway at Lodi and stopped at a petrol station.
But then he jumped into his BMW and flew away when he spotted state soldiers coming to pick him up, police said.
The speedster then went to the Totowa police station, where he tried to tell the soldiers that he had symptoms of COVID-19 before being taken to prison, police said. It was not clear if he was really sick.
Ospina could not immediately be reached for comment.
