Extending the NFL to a regular season of 17 games could throw a key to plans for a future Super Bowl site.

The league plans to relocate the 2024 Super Bowl from New Orleans due to a potential conflict with Mardi Gras.

New Orleans won the event in 2018, when the NFL was not part of a 17-game season. The scheduled arrival of the extended regular season beginning at some point between 2021 and 2023, as indicated by the new collective collection agreement, may result in a change to the accommodation schedule for the Super Bowl.

“The New Orleans host committee, chaired by the New Orleans Saints and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, has been in close communication with league officials regarding the move to a regular season of 17 games, with concerns the city that will host the Super Bowl LVIII in 2024, “said Saints’ vice-president of communications Greg Bensel in a statement. “During the 2018 application process, consideration was given to discussing the possibility of an extended calendar based on a new ABC. The Bid Committee, the New Orleans Saints, and the NFL worked together to accommodate contingencies in the event of a potential Mardi Gras conflict. The mutually agreed terms during the bid process have given assurances that the NFL and the organizing committee will explore all options to host the game in 2024, or, agree to host the Super Bowl in a future year when the calendar for city allowed. ”

New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl 10 times, just behind the greater Miami area.

The next Super Bowls are expected to be held in Tampa in 2021; Inglewood, California, in 2022; and Glendale, Arizona, in 2023.
