Rooney on Ronaldo and red card 2006

Wayne Rooney scored his red card for England against Portugal at the 2006 World Cup as one of his “lowest feelings” in football, but thinks the incident was the spark of a relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo who took Manchester United to new heights.

Rooney was sent off in a quarterfinal against Portugal after a clash with Ricardo Carvalho, but the main topic of discussion was Ronaldo’s role in the incident, imploring referee Horacio Elizondo to send his club teammate and wink at the bench once. Rooney was fired.

England then lost the quarterfinals on penalties and while sitting in the locker room Rooney knew he would miss a semifinal and a World Cup final or be blamed for the exit Three Lions. But he also received messages about the role of Ronaldo in his red card and undertook to sort out any discomfort before the couple left Gelsenkirchen.

Here’s what Rooney wrote in his Sunday Times column .

“I had my phone in my hand and I received all these messages on Ronaldo. Of course, when he ran to ask Elizondo to send me, I pushed him away. At that time, I couldn’t believe what he was doing. But sitting in this locker room gave me time to calm down and think.

“I put myself in Ronaldo’s place. Would I do the same? Probably. Would I be in the face of the referee to make sure he was kicked out? If he deserved red, if that would help us win – yes, no doubt. I would do it tomorrow. I thought, “Actually, I tried to get it booked in the first half for diving. “And in the blink of an eye, I saw nothing at all. It was nothing.

“So I calmed down. I went to him after in the tunnel. I felt it was important to talk to him while he was still fresh and to face him face to face. He glanced at me as if to say sorry, but at that time, my head was united. I said I had no problem with you. Enjoy your tournament and good luck. I’ll see you in a few weeks – and let’s try to win the league. ”
