The sale of Mike Ashley’s £ 300 million to a consortium led by PCP Capital Partners of Amanda Staveley, supported by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and the Reuben brothers, is nearing completion.
However, it was an agreement that was not reached that left fans wondering what could have been.
In a recent Q&A on his social media account, West Brom forward Charlie Austin revealed that he is about to complete a transfer to St James ‘park
Austin was strongly linked to a move to the Magpies when Steve McLaren was in charge in 2015. The 30-year-old had just finished a season in which he had scored 18 Premier League goals for QPR.
He told a fan that he had accepted the move on his side, only to make it happen before the end – eventually joining Southampton the following January.
Newcastle fans react to Austin’s comments
@LondonToonFanTV: It would have been a better signing than Mitrovic, he knows the Premier League, he did it to the QPR
@ Jgray2706: And then Newcastle ruined everything?
@GavJHinch: At the time, I thought we had missed a good deal for a confirmed attacker.
@NUFCLewizc: I got my fingers crossed all summer haha !!
@ GrahamShannon82: Should come when he went to West Brom, but he went for the cheap PR option in Carroll.
@Nufc_Seb: I crossed my fingers for that to happen. Aside from injuries, one of the most natural finishers in the country at the time.
@ 17JamesBeedie: Empty
@ Stevo4474: It would have been perfect for us .. too bad the club is rotten so you were lucky escape buddy
