Michael Che pays rent for grandma’s apartment building after his death from coronavirus

Michael Che turned his grief into a gift.

After his grandmother’s death this month from the coronavirus, the star of “Saturday Night Live” pledged on Wednesday to pay the rent for all residents of the apartment complex where she lived.

“It’s crazy for me that residents of social housing still have to pay their rent when so many New Yorkers cannot even work,” Che wrote on Instagram. “Obviously, I can’t offer a lot of help on my own. But in the mind and memory of my late grandmother, I pay a month’s rent for the 160 apartments in [New York City Housing Authority] building where she lived. ”

“I know it’s just a drop in the bucket,” added Che. “So I really hope the city has a better debt relief plan for everyone in social housing, AT LEAST.”

Che’s grandmother, Martha, died on April 5 after contracting COVID-19.

“I am obviously very hurt and angry that she had to endure all this pain alone,” Che wrote at the time. “But I’m also happy that she no longer suffers. “

In the home edition of “SNL” last weekend, Che paid tribute by signing “Weekend Update” as “Martha’s grandson”.
