Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick”, a sequel to 1986’s Tom Cruise classic, is the last summer film to leave its release date, with theaters closed to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The planned follow-up was scheduled to start on June 24 and will now be published on December 23, 2020.

As part of the redesign of the release, Paramount also moved “A Quiet Place Part II” – which the studio postponed last month – to September 4, 2020. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run”, an animated adventure based on the absorbent underwater fry cooker, was originally scheduled to hit theaters on May 22 and will now bow down on July 31, 2020. Meanwhile, the fantasy science fiction movie “The Tomorrow War”, previously scheduled for December 25, 2020, is no longer dated.

These films join a growing list of sprawling posts that have been removed from circulation due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent closure of multiplexes. Sony recently delayed most of its summer slates, including “Morbius” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”. In recent weeks, Disney has reported “Black Widow” and “Mulan”, while Warner Bros. redesigned “Wonder Woman 1984” and “In the Heights” and Universal suspended “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “Fast & Furious”. F9. “

At the moment, it is clear that the studios do not expect the cinemas to reopen by mid-summer. Even though movie theaters are able to turn on the lights by July, when “SpongeBob” is due to be released, exhibitors are wary of how the public will be eager to resume normal activities, like going to the movies, after exiting the world health crisis.

“Top Gun: Maverick” cost over $ 150 million to make, so Paramount is counting on massive ticket sales to make a profit. The delay gives Paramount more time to launch a massive global marketing campaign. It could have been more difficult if “Top Gun: Maverick” had tried to maintain its summer release date. Cruise is preparing to star in the seventh film “Mission: Impossible” – production in Europe was delayed when the coronavirus hit Italy. This will allow him to shoot this sequel and to participate in the “Top Gun: Maverick” campaign.

Cruise, more than 30 years after the first film, resumes his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in “Top Gun: Maverick”. Cruise then returns to flight school to train Top Gun graduates on a specialized mission. Val Kilmer will resume his role as Maverick’s Icaver rival, while Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Glen Powell will join the cast.

“SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run” sees best friends SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star exit Bikini Bottom and head to the lost city of Atlantic City on a rescue mission to rescue the faithful SpongeBob Snail Gary . This is the third theatrical film “SpongeBob” after “SpongeBob SquarePants movie” in 2004 and “SpongeBob movie: sponge out of water” in 2015. Both were successful commercial, earning more than $ 450 million worldwide.
