Thomas Frake was crowned winner of MasterChef 2020.

Tooting, a 32-year-old banking and finance professional, saw his victory unfold on screen after being pulled from his city job due to the coronavirus pandemic on Friday.

After his victory, Thomas revealed that he may have to put his dream of opening a gastropub on hold, as the restaurant industry continues to be hit hard by the nationwide lockout.

Thomas filmed his victory for Masterchef in December, but kept his victory secret to the majority of his friends and family.

While he had originally planned to watch his latest episode with loved ones, due to social isolation, he watched the victory with his girlfriend in their apartment in Tooting.

Talking about his plans after winning the show, Thomas said he would like to gain work experience in a kitchen before opening his own gastropub.

But after being put on leave from his banking job, he added that his plans may have to be put on hold.

He told The Times: “The restaurant industry has been hit very hard, even when the lockout ends, it will take time for the chefs to get their kitchens up to date.”

Thomas started cooking at the age of seven, but said it was only at the age of 21 that he started “properly” to get started.

He said: “My real appreciation for food started after trips to Greece and Spain, where I experienced the Mediterranean diet for the first time.

“I love to understand why and how the ingredients are grown where they are found, the people who grow them and where the recipes come from. This is why I like the amplified and successful classics. “

Thomas seduced judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with his incredible version of pub favorites, with a side dish of monkfish langoustines with marinated fennel, pickles, onions and tartar sauce.

For his main dish, he opted for braised beef cheek with black molasses, with crispy onions, grated vegetables and horseradish puree.

He then topped his incredible meal with a salted caramel pie with orange zest, caramel popcorn and popcorn ice cream.

The mix of flavors and the choice to stick to the dishes he wanted to eat himself proved to be the perfect combination, and Thomas received the Masterchef trophy.

Speaking after the victory, he said, “Honestly, it’s a dream come true. It was huge and the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.

“I can’t see myself not working in food for the rest of my life because it makes me happy to see other people satisfied.”

John added, “Thomas is a real talent and his food has always been to make you smile. I admire Thomas’s work ethic, he’s a graftist.

“He is able to take a classic and deliver it with real style and finesse. It’s a gift from a great cook. He knows exactly which direction he wants to go and, for me, his food today was delicious.

Gregg added, “Thomas has a definitive style. It takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary. I really admire Thomas. He wants to take all the foods he grew up with and improve them.

“He has delighted me throughout the competition and today I think his three courses were simply exceptional. They had his heart and soul in every fork. “

Unfortunately, that meant that the other finalists David Rickett, 31, and Sandy Trag, 24, had lost the trophy, despite producing equally impressive three-course meals.

Although he won the show, Thomas recently revealed that he had not yet received the 2020 Masterchef trophy due to the coronavirus lockout.

He said: “The trophy is still locked due to social isolation and quarantine in the UK.

“The crew can’t really access it so they can pass it on to me.

“I touched him once for a few press photos before Christmas and I haven’t touched or seen him since. I think it will take a few more weeks before I end up on the library.

“He is in quarantine himself. I will see it once life returns to normal.
