Authorities announced on Monday that Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean’s body had been discovered in about 25 feet of water and recovered, authorities said.

McKean’s body was located about 4 km south of his mother, the home of former Maryland lieutenant governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend in Shady Side, Maryland, about a week after his disappearance. The canoe was launched from home, according to a press release from the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

The recovery came after a multi-day search involving underwater imaging and aviation sonar technology. The US Coast Guard reported on Saturday that the search for survivors had moved from a rescue mission to a recovery mission, a family member said.

Authorities have announced that they will continue to search for her son, Gideon McKean, an 8-year-old son. The two were reported missing in a canoe accident last week, according to reports that two people canoeing in Chesapeake Bay were capsized by strong winds, the statement said.

In a Facebook article posted on Friday, Maeve McKean’s husband David said their family was quarantining themselves in an empty house owned by his wife’s mother in the hopes of giving their children more space they had at home in Washington, DC

The mother and son got into the canoe to chase a ball that went into the water at a family reunion, McKean’s husband David McKean told The Washington Post.

“They just went out further than they could bear and couldn’t get in,” he told the newspaper.
