Trump encourages resistance to closures imposed by Democrats, but some GOP governors are also hesitant to go too fast
President Trump on Friday amplified his call to reopen the country, suggesting that citizens should “free themselves” even when the governors and local officials in the regions he said were ready to return to normal expressed their worry about moving too early.
Republican governors have been slow to accept Trump’s call to lift statewide home orders amid the coronavirus pandemic that kills thousands of Americans. Democratic governors have increasingly spoken out against what they describe as a lack of federal leadership in an effort to respond to shortcomings in testing and equipment.
Texas announced a plan on Friday to ease restrictions on economic activity. But Governor Greg Abbott’s (R) proposal made few immediate changes to home order and left many decisions for the end of the month after consultations with new “strike force” from business leaders and health professionals.
