The Jaguars traded Nick Foles to Chicago, leaving Gardner Minshew as the starting quarterback. Ball carrier Leonard Fournette, however, wants the Jaguars to sign a veteran quarterback to compete with Minshew.
Specifically, Fournette wants Cam Newton as his teammate.
Fournette said aloud what he had written on social media during an appearance on ESPN First Take on Thursday.
“Cam went to the Super Bowl,” said Fournette, via ESPN’s Michael DiRocco. “He’s a great guy. I’ve known Cam for a minute now. And as I said to some people who have spoken to me, it is not disrespectful to [Minshew]. I’m just trying to be in the best possible position as a team [to] to win.
“That’s all that was going on. Just a friendly competition that brings out the best in people. “
The Panthers cut Newton on March 24 after nine seasons. He remained a free agent, ranked at the top of the PFT list of the top 25 remaining free agents.
Minshew, a sixth-round pick in 2019, set team rookie passing (3271) and touchdown (21) records. But Foles’ departure leaves Minshew as the only quarterback on the list with a lot of regular season experience.
The Jaguars have repeatedly expressed confidence in Minshew, but Doug Marrone and Dave Caldwell have said they expect to add another quarterback to accompany Minshew and Josh Dobbs, who has played 30 shots. Whether in the project or in free agency remains to be seen.
