Veteran actress Shirley Douglas died at 86 of pneumonia, son of actor Kiefer Sutherland announced on Twitter Sunday, paying tribute to his “extraordinary” mother.
“Early this morning my mother, Shirley Douglas, died from complications from pneumonia,” Sutherland wrote in her Twitter statement, adding that her death was not related to the coronavirus. “My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived an extraordinary life. Unfortunately, she had been fighting for her health for some time and we, as a family, knew that this day was coming. “
Longtime Toronto actress Douglas was married to actor Donald Sutherland from 1966 to 1971, with twin children, Kiefer and Rachel. Her granddaughter is “Veep” star Sarah Sutherland. Her father was the former Premier of Saskatchewan, Tommy Douglas, founder of the Canadian medicare system.
The actress appeared as Ms. Starch in “Lolita” by director Stanley Kubrick (1962) and in “Dead Ringers” by David Cronenberg (1988) and as a widowed mother during the Depression in the television drama “Wind at My Back” (1996 ).
