For a brief period, Justin Gaethje had a hopeful UFC title fight. Unfortunately, he will now have to wait for his first UFC gold offer.

Gaethje was called up when undisputed UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced to quit his UFC 249 title fight with Tony Ferguson. Gaethje accepted the offer and was confronted by Ferguson in a fight for the light interim title on short notice.

Unfortunately for Gaethje, the excitement did not last long. Just days after accepting this short-term interim title fight with Ferguson, UFC President Dana White had to unplug the card from UFC 249 amid the growing threat of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gaethje reacted to the cancellation of his title fight on Friday. Like many other fighters who were to participate on the map, he praised Dana White for trying to get there.

See what Gaethje had to say below:

“I really felt a wave of energy and support as this fight developed from so many people around the world, it was very humiliating. I am grateful to represent Safford, AZ and my close friends and family. I will work hard to be ready the next time the opportunity arises. Let’s go through this fight which we are all facing at the moment by having a positive impact on our immediate environment (family, neighbor, community) Thank you !! ? Boss @danawhite is someone I’m proud to do business with. # ufc249 ” – Justin Gaethje on Instagram.

What do you think is the next step for Gaethje after the cancellation of UFC 249?
