In case you are fed up with all the streaming services you are already using to pass the time right now, HBO Max is almost there.

You may be thinking, “Oh, I have HBO Go or HBO Now. Surely, this does not concern me! “

Sorry, but that’s not the way WarnerMedia works right now. HBO Max is a brand new streaming service that understands the same content as the company’s other two online services, but this is just the start. It also houses a ton of original shows and movies, as well as a host of other existing content from across the WarnerMedia empire.

Mashable’s renowned entertainment team has you covered with a breakdown of everything that happens to HBO Max, as well as trailers for its launch day lineup. But you most likely have lingering questions about what it will cost, where to find it, and what level of streaming quality you can expect when it launches on May 27.

Let us explain this to you.

How much should I pay? What about current HBO subscribers?

First, a stand-alone HBO Max subscription costs $ 15 per month. It’s a little more than what Hulu and Disney Plus each charge, but WarnerMedia probably thinks the breadth of its content will sell out. It’s also the same exact monthly rate as HBO Now, which makes the old service look questionable in comparison.

I have great news for anyone who cares: HBO Now subscribers have access to Max without any supplement. And since it contains all of the same glorious HBO content, as well as tons of other shows and movies, you might as well upgrade to Max full-time.

Unfortunately for HBO Go users (i.e. those who subscribe to HBO via a cable operator), things are a little more murky. The official WarnerMedia FAQ simply says “stay tuned for more details” to find out how traditional HBO subscribers can access Max.

People who get their TV service through AT&T don’t have to wait, however. AT&T has announced that subscribers to certain DirecTV and AT&T packages will have access to HBO Max for free. You can find out if your package is eligible here.

What devices can I watch HBO Max on?

Unfortunately, we still don’t know which devices will or will not support HBO Max. Its website says the service will be available on “phones, tablets, Mac and PC browsers, streaming media players, and game consoles,” but did not provide details. We contacted WarnerMedia and were told there would be more announcements before May 27.

Can I watch HBO Max in 4K or HDR?

With more and more large streaming services supporting 4K Ultra HD streaming, as well as HDR in some cases, it is worth asking whether HBO Max will also make its way. After all, neither HBO Go nor HBO Now is 4K or HDR compatible.

Bad news: we don’t know yet! None of the pre-release marketers has said anything about 4K or HDR streaming for HBO Max. Once again, WarnerMedia has assured us that there will be more technical announcements ahead of its launch.

So, as you can see, there is still a lot we don’t know about HBO Max – and it’s only a month before you can take advantage of it. But we’ll be sure to let you know once we’ve found all of these juicy technical details about the cable’s new streaming service.
