More than 260 million Orthodox Christians celebrated Easter Sunday, with church leaders urging worshipers to stay home to avoid spreading the new coronavirus.

While many watched online or television services, some viruses circumvented fears of attending churches on the most important date on the Orthodox calendar.

In Georgia, several hundred people participated in a midnight mass at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi after the government authorized public participation despite a night curfew aimed at fighting the virus.

Orthodox Christians, the third largest group of Christian believers in the world, celebrate Easter this year a week after Catholics and Protestants because they follow a different calendar.
