How Welsh Chippy’s owner reacted to a woman’s “rant” during the lockdown

A woman was not impressed with a chip after refusing to take card payments over the phone during the lockout.

She decided to leave a TripAdvisor review on April 3, as the UK came to the end of the second week of the lockdown – which includes a strict ban on non-essential travel.

The review appears to show that the woman is from Newcastle-under-Lyme, 117 miles from the city of North Wales.

In her review, the woman said she called the chip shop to place an order Friday evening and was told that she should reserve a time slot and that their service was “cash only”.

However, Caernarfon shop owner and former county councilor Endaf Cooke insists she hung up before he even had a chance to tell her they accept bank transfers, reports North Wales Live.

He said, “Home deliveries are a temporary thing for us while all this continues.

“We follow government guidelines and if people pay cash, they tend to leave money outside in an envelope and I leave their food on the doorstep to avoid contact.

“When I told her we couldn’t accept card payments over the phone, she verbally assaulted me and hung up before I could tell her she could wire through online banking.

Scathing review by J C Chippy in Caernarfon left by a holidaymaker during the government forced foreclosure

“Many of our customers have paid by bank transfer so far, that’s okay.

“We are a small business and we simply cannot afford the cost of operating a card machine.

“I didn’t realize she was a vacationer until I saw the notice and its location.

“I’m not at all negative about tourists, we rely a lot on tourism in this part of Wales, but why are they still there when we should all be at home.” “

“I would understand a bad review if it had poor service or if the food was not good enough, but it didn’t even go that far before it got angry and hung up.

“I know I can’t please everyone, but I’ve been in business for 23 years and 99% of the time, I do it right.

“If I don’t, I take it on the chin, I apologize and offer a refund, but it was just she who was really trying to stick the knife. “

“The worst part is that nobody should travel anywhere for a vacation at a time like this. “

Mr. Cooke, who was also a member of the city’s Chamber of Commerce at one time, decided to keep his business in operation during the foreclosure to provide delivery service to the elderly or the immobile.

Owner response

He said, “I was going to close, but another city chip shop owner told me that if you followed government directives, you could continue to negotiate.

“We only allow one member of the public at a time and we have markers on the ground to make sure no one is too close.

“It’s too bad she didn’t think about it before reacting but it’s her loss and I told her that.

“She was concerned that the contacts are giving money back, but not that I had prepared the food and handled the packaging? That does not make sense.

Endaf Cooke of J&C Chippy on Pool Street, Caernarfon

“We have received hundreds of positive comments since I posted the review on Facebook and that is what I will focus on.

“I can’t thank the people of Caernarfon enough for their support, I really thank them and I applaud the North Wales police for all they do to make sure people follow the rules. “
