The New England Patriots have draft needs throughout their offense and defense this year. So why does it feel like they will inevitably make a choice out of the left field in the first round with their 23rd choice in total?
These are the positions where the Patriots seem to have the least need today. And if the Patriots select a player to one of these positions with their first-round pick during the NFL 2020 draft, some members of the fan base will certainly launch obscenities on social networks and possibly remote controls on their screens. of TV.
They couldn’t, right?
Let’s go. These are the Patriots we are talking about. Of course they could.
Patriots fans would probably prefer the Patriots to take a real left fielder.
The Patriots made a first round pick on Sony Michel in 2018 and a third round pick on Damien Harris last spring. The Patriots’ depth record was so busy last season that Harris barely played.
The only way to make this happen is if the Patriots cut multiple backs or if they can find a business partner for Michel.
Cornerback is the 90-strong roster of the Patriots with Stephon Gilmore, JC Jackson, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams and Justin Bethel, all of which rank in the depth chart. They just made a second-round pick on Williams last season, and he, like Harris, has barely seen any significant shots.
The only way to make sense of it is for the Patriots to trade Gilmore. Again, the Patriots could be looking to the future rather than to current needs.
No one wants their favorite team to write a goalkeeper in the first round. This is the grilled chicken sandwich from picks. Sure, in the end, you’re probably better off for that, but it’s so bland and uninspiring.
The Patriots already have Shaq Mason in the right guard and they have franchised the left guard Joe Thuney. The needs of the Patriots on guard would increase if they traded Thuney. They could also take an indoor offensive lineman if they feel center David Andrews will not play after having blood clots in their lungs last season.
Here are a few other choices that would likely drive some Patriots fans crazy:
WR Brandon Aiyuk: Another Arizona State wide receiver ?!
QB Jordan Love: He threw 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2019.
QB Jacob Eason: Another quarterback that could turn out to be a project.
DT Ross Blacklock: Injury concerns.
DE Terrell Lewis: No more injury issues.
Reduce: it would not be the worst idea, since the NFL 2020 draft is considered deep. What could really irritate fans, however …
Swap: … If the Patriots just swapped next season. There’s nothing worse than waiting all year for the draft just to be changed next year.
