Getting in shape to play a superhero is no easy task. Actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are known to spend weeks, even months, getting in the best possible shape before stepping onto a film set to represent their characters. Before, we break down how some of the biggest players in the MCU have been torn apart for their roles.
Watch any movie in the MCU, be it Iron Man – the film that led to the Avengers film franchise and the rise of Marvel Studios – or a more recent addition such as Black Panther (2018) or Avengers: Endgame (2019) and there will be a strong, ripped actor dominating the fight scenes. To be able to do what their role required, or at least to look realistic when stunts doubled the most complicated movements, the actors had to go to the gymnasium and pay close attention to their diet.
Chris Evans: “I lifted heavy objects and put them down”
In 2011 Chris Evans made his first appearance as Steve Rogers better known to MCU fans as Captain Marvel. He played in Captain America: the first avenger and has become a staple in the MCU. Needless to say, he had years to figure out how to get into superhero shape and when Avengers: Endgame came, Evans probably knew exactly what he had to do to get ripped off.
In an interview in 2019 with the Men’s Journal, Evans mentioned what his training process was like to prepare the record film. “I went to the gym and lifted heavy objects and put them down. And then I raised it again then I rested it until I was tired, “he said with a smile.
Of course, he did more than that. In the past, he had worked with his personal trainer, Simon Waterson, to help him get ripped off. Waterson told Coach Magazine in 2016 that he asked Evans to perform a series of high / low repetition movements to help him quickly build lean muscle.
Robert Downey Jr. has gained more than 20 pounds
After Robert Downey Jr. claimed to get the role of Tony Stark aka Iron Man, he actually had to prepare for the role. Working with a personal trainer, the 54-year-old actor has over 20 pounds of muscle, according to the Men’s Journal.
“We reduced the cardio and really increased the weight it lifted,” said Brad Bose, the actor’s trainer.
Not only that, Downey Jr. ate 5,000 calories a day and continued his long-standing practice of Wing Chun, a technique popularized by Bruce Lee.
Brie Larson trained for almost a year
When 30-year-old actress Brie Larson joined the MCU as captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers, she would have trained for almost a year before filming began in 2019. Captain marvel.

With the help of not one but two personal trainers, Johansson managed to convincingly play a fighter with serious muscles. The actress herself has trained to lift 245 pounds and do push-ups with 45-pound weights on her back. In addition to strengthening his strength and agility in the gymnasium, Johansson practiced eating for a limited time.
