Hospital bosses defend Ross Kemp after backlash against coronavirus documentary

The bosses of Milton Keynes University Hospital defended their decision to let Ross Kemp film a documentary about the coronaviruses there.

The new series, Ross Kemp: On the NHS front line, will lift the lid on the fight that takes place behind the closed doors of NHS COVID-19 fights.

Ross went behind the scenes at the hospital to show the realities of the coronavirus and promoted the series on his social media.

Many people expressed their frustrations, the former soap star was allowed to enter hospitals, but family and friends could not see their loved ones who were in bed.

However, a spokesperson for Milton Keynes University Hospital defended the investigative reporter’s trip to film the documentary.

It was stressed that the documentary was essential to show the public that they should stay at home to protect the NHS.

In addition, the documentary was used to show that other elements of the hospital were still in full swing from maternities to emergency rooms.

The statement from Milton Keynes University Hospital reads: “We have seen a number of questions and concerns raised following the announcement that Ross Kemp was filming a documentary at Milton Keynes University Hospital.

“There is a lot of anxiety and confusion both about the ability of the NHS to respond to the pressures of COVID-19 and the type of care that is available to those with the virus.

“After discussions with the NHS England, we felt it was important to give controlled access to the hospital to major media so that the public could be informed and reassured about the hospitals’ response to COVID-19.

“The decision was made jointly by the NHS England and the hospital’s executive directors in collaboration with the clinical teams.

“At a time when the spread of COVID-19 and the ability of the NHS to respond to the pressures the virus will create is causing national concern, we felt it was important to give a true account of the work done in hospitals and community settings and measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

“We hope the program will help to reinforce the message that it is important that members of the public stay at home and protect the NHS.
