Durham region public health officials say six COVID-19 patients from a long-term care home in Oshawa have died.

Glendene Collins of the Durham Region health department says that another 21 people at Hillsdale Terraces long-term care home are confirmed to have the new coronavirus.

The Durham region recorded 232 confirmed cases of COVID-19. So far, seven of the 15 deaths have occurred in long-term care facilities.

Many long-term care facilities have become hotspots for the virus, including Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, where up to 23 residents of the 65-bed facility died from the coronavirus.

At least 24 facility staff have also tested positive for COVID-19.

The news comes the day another 25 people in Ontario succumbed to COVID-19, bringing the province’s death toll from the virus to 119.
