Gretzky and Ovechkin Raise Over $ 40,000 for Charity During NHL 20 Broadcast

In a battle of the Greats, the real winner was charity.

Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin clashed in NHL 20, broadcast on Twitch on Wednesday, and raised more than $ 40,000 for two local charities.

The money will be split between the Edmonton Food Bank and the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation’s “Feeding the Frontlines” fund, which provides meals from Capitals and Washington Wizards chefs to frontline workers fighting COVID- 19 in the Washington area.

More than $ 20,000 was raised through donations during the broadcast, while Ovechkin and Gretzky will each match the half that goes to the charities of the city they represented.

On the virtual ice, Gretzky won the first game in a 5-4 overtime thriller. The Ovechkin Capitals tied the game with less than three seconds left, but the Gretzky Oilers rebounded to win on a shot from the slot machine.

Ovechkin took control early in Game 2 and maintained the 4-1 victory over two periods.
