Getting my payment: here’s how to check your stimulus money

The first payments will go to those who have already filed their 2018 or 2019 tax returns and authorized the Internal Revenue Service to make a direct deposit if they were to receive a refund. Within this group, the agency begins with those with the lowest incomes. Social security recipients will also automatically receive their payments, even if they have not filed a return.

But there are tens of millions of people who don’t fall into these categories. Taxpayers who did not allow direct deposit could wait weeks before receiving a check in the mail – although they can update their bank details using the new Treasury web portal, which should go online this week.

Those who have not been required to report in the past two years may need to submit information online before receiving payment.

How do I check the status of my payment?

The IRS creates an online tool, called Get My Payment, which can be used to check the status of your money. It is expected to launch this week and be available on the IRS website.

You will need to enter your social security number, date of birth and postal address in order to track your payment, said the Treasury Department.

Am I eligible?

Eligibility is largely income-based and excludes people earning more than $ 99,000 and married couples (without children) earning more than $ 198,000. Those who can be declared as dependents for tax purposes, like many students, are also ineligible for payments, as are undocumented immigrants who do not have a social security number.

But everyone should receive money.

How much will I receive?

Individuals must pay up to $ 1,200 and couples will receive up to $ 2,400 – plus $ 500 per child.

But payments are starting to gradually disappear for people with adjusted gross income over $ 75,000 and married couples who earn over $ 150,000. The amount will then be reduced by $ 5 for each additional $ 100 of adjusted gross income.

How can I get my money back faster?

The IRS first sends money to those for whom it has bank account information on file. It may not be you if you have not received a tax refund in the past two years – or if you have received a refund by postal check rather than direct deposit.

But the Get My Payment tool, which is slated to roll out this week, will also allow taxpayers to enter their bank account information so they can receive the money electronically rather than by paper check – which could take some time. weeks or even months.

To do this, a taxpayer will have to submit his adjusted gross income from his last income tax return, the reimbursement or the amount due this year, as well as the account and routing numbers of his bank account.

However, taxpayers will not be able to update their bank information once payment is already scheduled for delivery, and this will not allow you to update the bank information already on file, the Treasury Department said.

What if I haven’t filed a tax return?

There are millions of low-income people who are not normally required to file tax returns who will need to take action before receiving their stimulus money.

Typically, these are people who did not earn more than $ 12,200 last year or married couples who did not earn more than $ 24,400.

But they will not have to file a completely new form, as suggested by previous IRS guidelines. Instead, he created an online tool that requests basic information, including names, date of birth, and social security numbers for the depositor and his or her dependents. They will not have to provide income information.

The new tool is “very simple, and probably much faster, than requiring non-filers to complete and submit a tax form,” said Erica York, economist at the Tax Foundation.

The challenge will be to make sure these people know the tool and to help those who do not have Internet access at home, she said.
