Manchester United star Fred praised the academy’s new group of players and revealed that midfielder James Garner was the youngster who had most impressed him.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to return to United’s roots to develop young players, with teenager Brandon Williams having played 26 times in all competitions while Mason Greenwood has 12 goals in 36 appearances for the first team.

Garner, who hasn’t had as many first team opportunities, is Garner, who has only played once in the Premier League, but Fred thinks his midfielder has a huge future in the game.

Asked which young United trio impressed him the most, Fred replied to Brazilian site Trivela: “They are all great players.

“The club has an important role to play in using many of the academy’s players, it has this history of using kids who come from the academy, who become professionals and make history at the club.

“This process is important. They are great players, with great potential for the future.

“All of them are very good, they are not in this business for nothing, but the player who impresses me the most is Jimmy Garner.

“Not only because he is in the same position as me, but because he is a player with an impressive vision for the game and a huge future for United.

“In addition to his impressive vision, he always plays head up, has an impressive shot and is an incredible passer. He’s a player I admire a lot. “

Garner is thought to have become a little frustrated with his lack of opportunities for the first team this season – especially compared to his Williams and Greenwood academy peers – and that he was linked to a January loan, though that Solskjaer decided to keep it.

“James will stay here,” said the boss of United earlier this year. “We will give him a chance to keep improving. He has had a bit of trouble lately, but he will be fine. “
