France reported 541 additional deaths from COVID-19 in hospitals in the past 24 hours on Wednesday, bringing the total number of official victims of the coronavirus epidemic to 10,869.

Senior health official Jerome Salomon told reporters that there are now 7,148 people in intensive care, a net increase of 17 from the previous day, the smallest increase in recent weeks.

He said that due to a technical error, there were no daily data available in nursing homes on Wednesday, which means that the overall death toll is likely to be incomplete.

The number of deaths in hospitals was slightly lower than the comparable number of the previous day, which was 597.

France has been blocked since March 17 in order to slow the spread of the epidemic, only essential travel being authorized and having to be justified by a signed paper.

Solomon said it had slowed the increase in the spread of the virus in recent days, adding that it was because the lock-up was widely observed.

“The slowdown observed in recent days is linked to your respect for the isolation rules,” he said.

He expressed the hope that France would see a flattening of its case curve in the coming days but stressed that this “plateau is at a very high level”.
