Véran said the latest deaths had brought the total number of people killed in the coronavirus epidemic in France to 8,911.

These figures remind France, blocked since March 17, that the fight against coronaviruses is far from being won.

France now gives a combined daily report of deaths in hospitals and nursing homes. Previously, she only charged the hospital toll daily.

Of the new deaths, 605 were recorded in hospitals, said Véran.

“The path is long”

” It is not finished. Far from there. The path is long. The figures that I have announced show it, “he said. “Stay at home and continue this containment effort,” he added.

But in more positive news, the Minister of Health said that more patients were also leaving intensive care, resulting in a net total of “only” 94 more patients in intensive care, the number the lower since the start of childbirth.

“We see that containment has a palpable impact. In France, we are starting to feel it, ”he added.

Véran said that the latest figures from statistical modeling showed that the reproduction rate – the number of people infected by an average infected person – was decreasing in France.

If the number is less than 1.0, it means that the average victim infects less than one person, which gives hope that the epidemic will end.

“Thanks to confinement, this rate is about 1.0 and probably a little lower and in some regions much lower”, he explained, adding however: “In other regions, it is higher than 1, 0, that’s why we have to stay at home ”.
