PARIS, April 1 (Reuters) – French health authorities reported on Wednesday 509 new deaths from the coronavirus, bringing the total to 4,032, making the country the fourth to exceed the threshold of 4,000 deaths after Italy, Spain and the United States.

The government’s daily count still only takes into account those who died in hospital, but authorities say they will soon be able to compile data on deaths in retirement homes, which should lead to a sharp increase in recorded deaths.
