Paris: France said Friday that there has so far been no evidence of a link between the new coronavirus and the work of the P4 research laboratory in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the current pandemic started.

“We would like to point out that there is to date no factual evidence corroborating the information recently published in the American press which establishes a link between the origins of COVID-19 and the work of the P4 laboratory in Wuhan, China,” said an official in the office of President Emmanuel Macron.

The broad scientific consensus maintains that SARS-CoV-2, the official name of the coronavirus, comes from bats.

In 2004, France signed an agreement with China to establish a laboratory for research on infectious diseases of biosafety level 4, the highest level, in Wuhan, according to a French decree signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Michel Barnier era.
