The James Smith Cree Nation has its first confirmed case of COVID-19.

A public notice signed by Chief Wally Burns was sent to community members on Sunday April 5. He said the individual was tested on Friday April 3 after developing symptoms. They isolate themselves at home.

The notice added that staff at the James Smith Health Clinic were working with public officials from the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority to monitor the situation and that those exposed were informed.

“Right now, prevention remains the best way for community members to protect themselves. It is essential that residents take precautions to protect themselves from respiratory disease, ”wrote Burns. “We urge community members to follow the precautions described by public health officials.”
