Fear of Liverpool Premier League effectively removed from the table by UEFA decision

UEFA has in fact removed the possibility of a “null and void” Premier League season in its latest announcement, although the fate of Liverpool’s Premier League hopes remains unclear.

By asserting that qualification for next season’s European competitions must be based on “sporting merit”, UEFA has essentially dismissed the possibility of a complete erasure of the 2019/20 results.

It had been Liverpool’s great fear as they strove to win their first top-level title in 30 years, with the Reds 25 points ahead of the Premier League standings and only two wins from becoming champions .

If no other match is possible in the current season, the Premier League could freeze the table as-is or use a point-by-match system to determine European qualification.

In this case, it would then be up to them to decide whether or not to grant Liverpool champion status, or whether the Reds were simply the first qualifiers in the Champions League without champions.

The decision would be entirely in the hands of the Premier League, as UEFA is not ready to issue a general order in all countries.

UEFA says leagues should use “objective, transparent and non-discriminatory” principles to determine European qualifications, with possible eliminations in situations where teams are close and competing for places.

Liverpool have already qualified for the Champions League next season.
