Tens of thousands of users around the world cannot access all of Facebook’s services, including Instagram and WhatsApp after a widespread outage.
According to Downdetector.com, Instagram appears to have experienced the most common outages with users in the U.S. and Europe as well as some in South America claiming to be unable to load news feeds and stories.
At 5 p.m. Wednesday, more than 28,000 reports flooded Downdetector.
Thousands of reports have also focused on the main Facebook social media site and app and WhatsApp, which is a company-owned messaging service.
The majority of Facebook users say they can’t see the photos, while others say their news feeds don’t load.
WhatsApp reports indicate that many users have been unable to connect to the service or are unable to receive or send messages.
From 6 p.m., Facebook services began to be restored.
A Facebook spokesperson declined to specify the nature of the outage, saying only that it was a “network error”.
“Earlier today, some people may have had problems with our family of apps due to a network error,” a Facebook spokesperson told MailOnline.
“The problem has been solved and we are operational again. We apologize for any inconvenience. ‘
A spokesperson said the network problem was not related to higher than usual internet use – an influx that has caused other widespread outages.
The spokesperson declined to specify the nature of the “network error” and said the company “generally [go] in this level of detail ”on these issues.
A request for comment indicating whether Facebook is still investigating the issue has not been returned.
Users went to Twitter in the middle of the outage to express their frustration.
“WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram are all down,” said a Twitter user.
“I can’t believe Mark Zuckerberg is giving April Fools around the world. “
Another joked that they could not “talk to their hundreds of friends.”
