Earlier this month, the CDC changed its guidelines on non-medical masks, urging the general population to wear them as a “voluntary health measure”. Homemade masks and blankets cannot prevent you from acquiring the respiratory pathogen coronavirus, but they are thought to block the larger particles from coughing, sneezing, or saliva from asymptomatic people. In other words, wearing a non-medical covering is protecting others you, and not the reverse.
The severity of theThe epidemic – with more than 775,000 confirmed cases in the United States and more than 2.4 million worldwide – has prompted certain local governments to make the wearing of the mask compulsory. If everyone wears one, it is logical that each asymptomatic carrier can help prevent the transmission of the virus, which has caused more than 167,000 deaths worldwide.
