Empire Sort-Of series finale ends on a high note

Empire has ended. Kind of. May be. But maybe not either.

The drama Fox was in the midst of filming its penultimate episode in history when production had to stop due to the pandemic, which means that tonight’s episode is currently serving as the series finale, but it might not serve as the series finale forever, depending on what happens when production can resume.

As showrunner Brett Mahoney told TVLine, there is a lot to consider, including whether the sets and cast are still available.

So for now, we have the episode tonight, a sort of hodgepodge of what was supposed to be the penultimate and the third to the last episode which included two dead, a breakup, a music festival and a film premiere, as well as a ton of flashbacks from the Lyon family when Cookie and Lucious found their way back to each other, after recovering their business.

The break belonged to Lucious and Yana, who already claimed that their relationship was nothing more than professional for the benefit of his father, but she quickly realized that Lucious still loved Cookie, then went on stage at the festival of Cookie music to sing a song Lucious wrote about Cookie.

Yana and Lucious then celebrated with a hug, which caused Yana’s father to lose his mind and shot them, killing Yana in the process.

Lucious and Yana’s father then had a scuffle, and Lucious killed Damon and only survived with the help of his prosthetic leg, although Cookie certainly thought he was dead for a second.

The whole family (minus one Jamal not mentioned) then enjoyed the film’s premiere on Lucious and Empire, celebrated with a final performance of Hakeem. So we didn’t get a flashcliffward shutdown earlier in the season when Cookie’s car exploded, but hopefully it will happen if Empire never gets a real series finale. Hope this day arrives!

Empire aired on Fox.
