In September 2019, Tesla announced a Model S with a 3-engine ‘pane-powertrain’ and a new ‘chassis prototype’.
Over the next few months, the automaker tested prototypes of the Model S with the new powertrain on the Nürburgring circuit.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk first said that the Tesla Model S with a “Plaid” powertrain and new rear-facing seats would arrive in October / November 2020.
After a few more tests, the CEO said the new high-performance version of the Model S would arrive in the summer of 2020.
Now Musk says Tesla is making changes to the Plaid version:
“We are going to simplify Plaid a bit. Was getting too complex. ”
He did not specify what Tesla plans to change as part of the new Plaid package, but the Tesla Model S Plaid prototypes spotted at the Nürburgring last year had a new fascia, a strange rear spoiler and more modifications.
The vehicles appear to be essentially track-ready versions of the Model S Performance, which is interesting in the context where Tesla now offers a set of tracks for the Model 3 Performance.
It should also have a larger battery.
We heard earlier this year that Tesla is working on a new ~ 110 kWh battery that should push the Model S lineup 400 miles on a single charge.
It is unclear how or if the simplified Plaid upgrade will affect the timeline of summer 2020.
The new generation Roadster is also expected to receive Tesla’s new Plaid 3-engine powertrain, but it is expected to come after the new version of the Model S.
I’m glad to hear that because what Tesla was testing last year seemed too “runway ready” for my liking.
Yesterday, on the Electrek podcast, Seth and I discussed the possibility for Tesla to use the shutdown at Fremont to update the production lines of Model S and Model X and prepare to restart production with the Plaid version and the new interior.
I think it would be a perfect opportunity, but if Elon says they are still working on the design, it seems unlikely that they will be ready by the time they restart production.
