The volatile leader said in a television speech that it is vital that everyone stays at home as authorities try to curb the spread of the virus, which has killed around 100 people and infected more than 2,300 in the country, reported Reuters.
“It’s getting worse. So again, I’m telling you the severity of the problem and that you need to listen, “said Duterte Wednesday evening.
“My orders to the police and the military … if there are problems and there is an opportunity for them to fight back and your life is in danger, shoot them down,” he said.
“Is that understood? Dead. Instead of causing trouble, I’m going to bury you, ”added Duterte.
His fiery comments came after local reports of multiple unrest and arrests of residents of a poor area in Manila who protested the lack of food aid.
National police chief Gen. Archie Gamboa said on Thursday that authorities have understood that Duterte “just overestimated” the law and that no one will be shot, Bloomberg News reported.
