Disney + is growing much faster than expected and takes a new step

Disney has announced an important milestone for its streaming service. Disney + now has more than 50 million paying subscribers worldwide. The realization comes after only five months on the market.

Disney director Kevin Mayer said the company was “truly humiliated” by the launch of Disney +. The subscription service is now available in more than 12 countries worldwide, with the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland added in the past two weeks.

Disney also described India as a particularly large region for the service, totaling 8 million subscribers alone. The company does not share a subscriber number specific to another region.

Disney + is now well ahead of its sister streaming service Hulu, which had 30.4 million subscribers according to Disney’s latest count. The new results for Disney + are well ahead of Disney’s expectations (probably very modest), as Disney expected between 60 and 90 million subscribers by 2024.

The increase in Disney + subscriptions may be linked to the current COVID-19 crisis, as more and more people stay at home and watch TV shows and movies to watch. It should also be noted that Disney brought Frozen II and Onward to Disney + ahead of schedule, which likely also contributed to the increase in subscriptions.

Disney + still has a lot of work to do to catch Netflix (167 million subscribers) and Amazon Prime Video (150 million subscribers), but it’s definitely a very good start.

There are over 500 movies and 350 TV shows on Disney +, including the 30 seasons of The Simpsons.
